Outdoor Braai Cost Calculator South Africa: Plan the Bricks, Chimney, Counters and Materials

Outdoor Braai Calculator— Illustrative diagram

A built-in outdoor braai can look deceptively simple.

There is the braai opening, a chimney, perhaps a counter on either side, and some facebrick. But once you start planning the actual build, the quantities add up quickly. The width of the cooking opening affects the firebox, grid and lintel. The counter length changes the brickwork and concrete slab quantities. The chimney height affects the flue system. Even the region where you are building can influence the material allowance.

The Price Your Build Outdoor Braai Calculator is designed to turn those dimensions into a practical material-planning estimate.

Rather than giving you a single rough “braai price”, the calculator builds up the main material components behind the structure.

Example: a 7 metre outdoor braai in the KZN Midlands

For this example, we planned a substantial outdoor entertainment area with a central brick braai and two side counters.

The calculator inputs were:

  • Overall braai and counter length: 7.00 m
  • Cooking opening: 1.20 m
  • Left counter-support wall height: 1.10 m
  • Right counter-support wall height: 1.10 m
  • Chimney height above the hood: 2.00 m
  • Region: KZN Midlands & Berg — Howick, Nottingham Road and Underberg

With a 1.20 m central cooking opening, the remaining width gives approximately 2.67 m of counter space on each side.

For this configuration, the calculator produced an indicative material allowance of approximately R19,161 including VAT. That is the material-planning figure rather than a complete installed braai price.

What goes into the calculation?

The calculator does considerably more than multiply the length of the braai by a generic rate.

For this example, the model allowed for the central masonry braai, hood and chimney, the brick support walls below the counter wings, mortar, firebrick lining, fire cement, the opening lintel, clay flue liner, chimney cowl or damper, an adjustable braai grid and ember tray, and the reinforced concrete slabs over the two counter wings.

The resulting estimate uses approximately 1,230 facebricks across the main braai and counter-support structure, together with mortar materials, firebox components and the chimney system.

The two concrete counter-wing slabs are based on a 75 mm reinforced slab allowance.

The physical materials in this example have an estimated combined mass of approximately 6.08 tonnes.

That last figure is useful because material weight is often overlooked when planning a project. Six tonnes of brick, sand, concrete and other materials still need to reach the site.

Location matters

This example uses KZN Midlands & Berg as the selected region.

The Price Your Build model applies a regional transport index to eligible material allowances rather than pretending that the same delivered material cost applies everywhere in South Africa.

For this calculation, the regional transport index is 1.08×, or approximately 8% above the Gauteng Metro baseline.

It is still an estimating adjustment rather than a quotation from a supplier or delivery company, but it provides a more realistic planning basis than using one national price regardless of location.

What does the R19,161 include?

The allowance covers the main above-ground material components for the brick braai, chimney and two counter wings.

It assumes that a suitable non-combustible base already exists.

It does not include new foundations or a base slab, paving, services, finishes, labour or professional fees.

The calculator also excludes direct trade labour deliberately. Labour can vary substantially according to site conditions, builder, finish requirements and construction method, so the material calculation is kept separate.

Why calculate the braai from dimensions?

Two outdoor braais can look similar in a photograph while requiring very different quantities.

A 900 mm cooking opening and a 1.2 m opening are not the same build. A compact 3 m braai wall is very different from a 7 m entertainment feature with two long counters. A taller chimney changes the flue requirement. Changing the counter height or overall width changes the masonry.

That is why Price Your Build asks for the dimensions first and calculates from them.

It is the same principle used throughout the Price Your Build estimator: describe what you intend to build, then calculate the quantities behind it.

Before you build

An outdoor braai involves fire, heat, structural masonry and smoke extraction, so the calculator should be used as a planning tool rather than a substitute for proper construction advice.

Final firebox dimensions, lintel bearing, chimney and flue sizing, smoke draw, chimney termination, waterproofing and clearances from combustible materials should be checked on site with a competent builder or fireplace supplier. Structural or unusual installations may also require engineering input.
